The public access sits beside the Governor's residence on West Bay Road, with a proper free car park, and it lands you in the middle of the beach's most generous section.
The bottom shelves so gently that waist deep water lasts fifty yards, the surface stays pool-calm most of the year, and lifeguarded it is not, but forgiving it certainly is. Families colonise the shade line, distance swimmers track the buoyed line north and south, and the people-watching is as good as the sea: paddleboards, catamarans and the endless promenade of the barefoot.
Scattered coral patches north of the access hold surprising fish traffic for such a swum stretch; the serious snorkel is fifteen minutes north at Cemetery Beach. Walkers own the real prize: the full seven miles run in either direction, resort bars conveniently spaced like water stations, and the law keeps every yard of sand public no matter whose loungers decorate it.
Ship-day middays bring taxi loads from George Town, so residents shift to mornings and the golden last hour, and you should copy them. Sunset here is the island's daily free spectacle: arrive forty minutes early, swim while the light turns, and stay until the applause of camera shutters dies down.
The access sits on West Bay Road at the midpoint of the beach, signposted, with the island’s most reliable free car park behind it. Buses along the corridor stop on request, and taxis from George Town or the cruise landing take ten to fifteen minutes on set fares. There are no public bathrooms at the access itself; the resort bars a short walk in either direction solve most problems in exchange for a drink order. Shade is limited to the treeline early and late, so an umbrella earns its space in high summer.
When several ships share the anchorage, tour buses deliver waves of visitors from late morning; the beach absorbs them better than anywhere else on the island, but the arithmetic still favours early birds. Cruise visitors doing it independently: a taxi straight here, three hours of swimming, and the return pickup agreed in advance beats most paid excursions for half the price.
