What surprises first timers

How easy everything is. English everywhere, US dollars everywhere, drivable distances, drinkable tap water and a level of safety that lets you relax properly. The islands are polished without feeling packaged, and the sea is the star of every single day.

The local rules that matter

Sundays are genuinely quiet: many shops close and the pace drops, so plan beach and boat days. Swimwear belongs on the beach, not in shops and restaurants, and a cover-up is expected once you step off the sand. The reef is protected by law, so reef safe sunscreen is the standard, and taking coral, shells or sea fans home is illegal. Camouflage clothing is prohibited in Cayman, a rule shared across much of the Caribbean that catches visitors out.

Packing right

Light clothing, one smart-casual outfit for dinner, reef safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky entries like Smith Cove, and a dry bag for boat days. Leave the drone at home unless you have checked the permit rules, and bring less than you think: the island runs on flip flops.
